  • We offer Meal Plans for 2 or 3 meals a day at Porter’s Island Thyme.  We can design a Plan to fit any budget.

Payment for Goods & Services on Salt Cay and Grand Turk

  • Cash is “king”, and only USD are accepted
  • Some establishments will take Traveler’s and personal checks.  Visa/MC is accepted for payment at Porter’s Island Thyme for payment of accommodation at Castaway…Salt Cay, Salt Cay Beach House, and Twilight Zone Cottage.
  • At Porter’s Island Thyme we can provide a cash advance on your Visa/MC with a service charge of 10%.


Stores on Salt Cay

  • Salt Cay has three grocery stores.  They stock basics:  canned vegetables, pasta, boxed cereal, boxed milk, water, drinks and snacks.  Occasionally, fresh vegetables may be available.
  • We can stock your accommodation with beverages, if you provide a list for us at least 2 weeks ahead of your arrival. If you have time in Providenciales or Grand Turk, there are stores there with a broader selection.
  • The Community Ferry makes 3 scheduled trips a week (Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays) to Grand Turk, weather and seas permitting.  The ferry leaves the dock on Salt Cay at 8:00 AM and returns at 2:30PM on Tuesdays and Fridays and returns at 12:30PM on Wednesdays.  We can arrange for a taxi to meet you at the ferry dock and transport you to the grocery stores on Grand Turk.


Other Restaurants on Salt Cay

  • Coral Reef Bar & Grill serves breakfast, lunch and dinner at this beach side location by the dive shop.  There is a rib/chicken barbeque each Sunday night.
  • Pat’s Place, a local restaurant, serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in the South District.  We recommend her cracked conch and pepper jelly.


Each of the island restaurants requests dinner reservations be made by 3:00 PM. We are a small island and it is also possible that a restaurant may close early if no one is expected for dinner.

Laundry facilities on Salt Cay

  • Flat linens and towels are changed once during the week at the properties we manage; Castaway…Salt Cay, Salt Cay Beach House, Twilight Zone Cottage.
  • Personal laundry service can be arranged.  The charge per load of personal laundry is $20.


Transportation on Salt Cay

  • Transfers from the airport to your accommodation are provided free of charge for guests staying at Castaway…Salt Cay, Salt Cay Beach House, Twilight Zone Cottage.
  • Bicycles may be rented for a charge of $100/week/bike.
  • Golf carts can be rented by the day or by the week.  Discounts are available if the golf cart is booked at the same time as your accommodation.
    • Please note that the number of golf carts available on Salt Cay is very limited.
    • Daily rentals begin at $60/day
    • Weekly rentals begin at $350/week


Phone and Internet Service

  • Guests staying at Castaway…Salt Cay will be provided with a complimentary local cell phone.  Guests staying at Salt Cay Beach House or Twilight Zone Cottage have the option of renting a phone for the week.
  • ATT services from the U.S. connect with the LIME service in the TCI.  The rates are usually about $2/minute for calls outside the country.
  • Porter’s Island Thyme has wi-fi service direct to satellite.


TV/DVD

  • There is a TV/DVD at Salt Cay Beach House.  DVDs are available at no charge at Porter’s Island Thyme.


Medical Care on Salt Cay

  • Salt Cay has a full time nurse and a nurse’s assistant available M-F for minor health issues.  They can administer medications for a cold or fever and can treat minor abrasions and bug bites.
  • For more serious health concerns, the nurse will contact the hospital in Grand Turk and transport can be arranged.  There is a pharmacy on Grand Turk.


Gift Shops on Salt Cay

  • Island Thyme Gifts has Haitian paintings, island prints, logo shirts & hats, batik shirts, gold and silver nautical jewelry and assorted Island souvenirs.  You can also find the complete selection of Salt Cay Salt Works products. (www.saltcaysaltworks.com)
  • The Beachcomber Shop has handmade lamps, mirrors, jewelry and furniture crafted from locally found woods and shells.
  • Splash Boutique has resort wear, jewelry and dive logo shirts and hats.


Beaching, snorkeling and scuba diving on Salt Cay

  • There are over 15 dive sites along the western shore of Salt Cay only minutes away from Deane’s Dock.  Excursions are offered to the Endymion wreck or Great Sand Cay, both of which are a full morning outing.
  • We highly recommend the personalized service and local expertise of Crystal Seas Adventures for your aqua and land adventures.
  • We have coordinated with the dive operations on Grand Turk to also provide the opportunity to dive the sites on the Grand Turk walls.  Oasis and Grand Turk Diving both offer dive trips for Salt Cay guests.  There are specific guidelines to these offers, so please just ask and we’ll fill you in.
  • There are snorkeling spots all over Salt Cay…you can explore under the cliffs at Pt. Pleasant or in front of the causarina trees on North Beach.  Stop by Island Thyme and we’ll show them to you.

Packing for Salt Cay

  • Island dress is informal for day and evening
  • From December through March the evenings can be cool enough for a light wrap
  • A light poncho or rain gear is a good idea, although we seldom have rain
  • The Caribbean sun is intense, so we recommend sunscreen and a hat
  • Personal insect repellent is sometimes necessary


Activities for Children on Salt Cay

  • Exploring and beach combing
  • Certify to scuba dive
  • Pet stingrays at Gibbs Cay

A few FUN FACTS about Salt Cay!

  • We will meet you at the Salt Cay Airport and orient you to the island upon your arrival.  We’d love to have you join us for your first dinner on the island!  It’s a fun way to begin your island adventure and a great way to get acclimated quickly to the island routines!
  • Most places on Salt Cay will run a tab for you during your stay.  You won’t need your wallet until you get ready to settle your bill the day before your departure.
  • At Porter’s Island Thyme, we prefer that you keep track of what you eat and drink. Drop off the list to us the day before you leave.
